Check out these additional video resources on GMOs.
This is an excellent video as it addresses many student misconceptions in a timely fashion. It delves into the science in an engaging and effective way. This would make a great hook or a recap at the end of a lesson.
SciShow host explains the science of Genetically Modifying Organisms. The host is very engaging and I have found students like his approach.
SciShow host explores some new technologies associated with GMOs.
Is this in our near future? Barry Schuler explains the science of GMOs and how they are safe.
Although this video will likely be too advanced for the entire class, you may want to direct some of your students to this video who are looking for a challenge. Barry Schuler also makes many comparisons to computer technology and therefore you may want to direct your students who love and understand computers to this video. When specifically asked about GMOs, he said, "Don't worry about that stuff. We've been doing it for years!"
This video serves as a appropriate contrast to the Barry Schuler Ted Talk. Here, Paul Root highlights the achievements of biotechnology while questioning its limits and implications. I believe the images would provoke a very interesting class discussion!
This video poses many interesting questions and could be used to prompt a class discussion or could provide ideas for specific debate questions. It might also be interesting to compare the information in this video to what is happening in Canada.
