Kingdoms and Domains
MINDS ON:
Provide students with a list of the 6 kingdoms and allow them to try and guess the order that the kingdoms were recognized.
*To increase engagement make it a game to see who is most accurate
- Get all students to create their list and then stand up
- Provide instruction like "Anyone who has bacteria as one of the first kingdoms put your hand up"
- If the students with their hand up is correct they remain standing while all others sit down, and vice versa if they are incorrect
PEDAGOGY:
- Provide the following answers with brief explanations and facilitate a discussion about the kingdoms
History of Kingdoms and Domians:
•Until 1800’s there were only 2 kingdoms; Plants and Animals
•1860s Protists was added
•1930s Bacteria
•1960s Fungi
•1990s Archea
•Today there a total of 6
Plants - A multicellular photosynthetic eukaryote with cellulose based cell walls
Animals - A eukaryotic multicellular organism with cells that do not have cell walls; heterotrophic organism that reproduces sexually and produces an embryo that undergoes stages of development
Protists - A eukaryotic organism, usually unicellular, that is not a fungus, plant, or animal
Bacteria - An individual prokaryotic cell
Fungi - a stationary heterotrophic eukaryotic organism whose cell walls contain chitin
Archea - An individual prokaryotic cell (many differences from bacteria, one is the presence of peptidoglycan in the cell wall)
History of Domains:
- Analysis at the cellular level deemed that their be a rank higher than Kingdom, Domain. The three domains are Archea, Prokaryotes and Eukaryotes.
Prokaryotic Cell - A small simple type of cell that does not contain a membrane bound nucleus
Eukaryotic Cell - A complex type of cell that contains a membrane bound nucleus; larger than prokaryotic cells
Heterotrophs: An organism that must consume other organisms to obtain energy yielding food
Autotrophs: Organism that obtains energy by making its own food

Display a table consisting of the defining features of each domain; divide the class into 6 groups, by seating location, and give them the responsibility of recording the information for a specific domain and kingdom (do not tell them that they will be sharing answers with others in the class; then instruct students to move around the classroom and share information with one another until they have completed the table. Provide a time limit.
CONSOLIDATION:
Give students 10 mins to review the information gathered on domains, and write down a question they still have, as an exit ticket, to be discussed next class
