Creative Piece:
Students are asked to make a symbaloo page in groups or individually for one of the topics taught during the Mendelian genetics unit. The page should include applications under each of the four categories:
After each group or individuals has completed their pages, they must go into one of their peers site and peer evaluate it. They must also complete one activity in each application and hand it in. This is a great culminating activity for all students in the class. If students have fallen behind they can use the resources their peers have found for them to re-learn the material. In the thinking, application, and communication sections of their symbaloo page, students will find resources such as labs and practice problems which will be a great resource to consolidate the information. Making students evaluate their peers pages gives all students the chance to review and practice their information. From a teachers point of view, each page that students create is yet another resource that teachers can use to teach the topic. All in all, this creative piece benefits everyone involve. It includes enough differentiation for all students the learn at their own pace. It involves collaboration in finding effective resources, it fosters critical thinking and communication in terms of completing peer activities, and creative in making the page. These are all aspects of 21st century learning which we as teachers need to incorporate in our pedagogy. |
